There are many different species of fish and they all like to live in condtions similar to their home waters or lakes. Consider a Discus fish living in water conditions suitable for African cichlids. You guessed it, the Discus fish wouldn’t be happy in those conditions. Several water supplements and conditioners (salts & buffers) are available. These supplements are designed to mimic the exact conditions of various lakes around the world. That is, Central American cichlids require a neutral pH living environment, whereas Tanganyinkan cichlids demand a high pH, for example. All lakes in Aftrica and in the Americas (such as Lake Vicoria, Lake Taganyika, Lake Malawa etc...) contain specific trace elements and minerals which are specific to those particular lakes. Cichlids and other fish that originate from specific lakes will be happier in the water conditions of their ancestors.

Above everything else you do to your aquarium, proper filtration is the key to a healthy, happy, vibrant tank.  You like to feed your fish a lot of food?  Your biological filter will handle a great deal of that nasty ammonia caused by overfeading but if you like to feed your fish a lot, add ammonia chips and activated charcoal to your filtration system and frequent your water changes.

A lot of times, over-feeding, poor water filtration, accumulation of fish waste and decomposition of any kind will cause unfavorable water conditions.  Water conditions like these cause diseases. Most of the diseases and conditions you will read below are currently in your tank right now, but if the water conditions are favorable, your fishes’ immune systems protect them. When they become unfavorable, many fish’s natural defenses break down and they become susceptible to disease. The point is, fish and plants are susceptible to diseases just like you and I and medications have been developed to treat them.
 
Some common diseases are Ichthyophthirius (Ich) and Lymphocystis. Treatment is easy, often in one or five doses.  Read all directions and specifications carefully.

Submersible water pumps or powerheads can be hidden behind aquarium decorations or live plants and provides a means for underground filtration and proper water circulation. External water pumps can also be used with underground filtration, but also can be used in conjunction with external filters units or sumps. 
Canister filters are external self-contained filtration units and  provide a method of external water filtration without the risk of causing fluctuations in water temperature, as submersible pumps can sometimes create.
